Less than one month after Gaithersburg City Police officers chased down and killed Kwamena Ocran, and nine months since Montgomery County Police killed Finan Berhe, who was in the throes of a mental health crisis, a Sheriff’s deputy has killed Kevin Costlow, a man who was also in crisis and was wielding a tree branch when he was shot and killed.

For nearly 15 years — the span of his political career — Craig Rice was a champion of police in public schools.

Proposal will recommend funneling SRO program funds into mental health, other services

Two Montgomery County councilmembers are planning to introduce a bill that would eliminate school resource officers (SROs) from county schools.

The Montgomery County Council heard impassioned public feedback Thursday evening on a bill to remove school resource officers from public schools.

A work group met for the first time Thursday to develop recommendations for alternative safety measures to replace armed officers in Montgomery County Public Schools.

After the killing of George Floyd last year, residents of Maryland’s Montgomery County held more than 120 protests against police violence, joining communities across the country in a wave of civil unrest not seen since the 1960s.

A boost in funding is on the way for police agencies across the state of Maryland to combat violent crime and also assist victims of crime. However, not everyone supports the idea.
