Job Purpose:
Young People for Progress requires a talented and systems-oriented individual to oversee and strengthen YPP’s internal operations. This person will be responsible for financial tracking, HR and compliance systems, organizational infrastructure, board support logistics, and general administrative management to ensure YPP’s programs and campaigns operate effectively and sustainably. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building and refining systems, maintaining high standards of accountability, and supporting grassroots organizing work behind the scenes.
Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: Part-Time (approximately 15–25 hours per week; flexible schedule)
Location: Montgomery County, Maryland (hybrid; some in-person meetings required)
About Young People for Progress:
Young People for Progress (YPP) is a community organizing organization building political power among young adults and youth in Montgomery County. YPP campaigns focus on ending youth criminalization, advancing restorative justice in schools, and reducing racial disparities in policing and traffic enforcement. Since its founding, YPP has won the removal of School Resource Officers from MCPS; secured restorative justice coaches in all 211 schools and full-time social workers in high schools; advanced local policy reforms addressing racial disparities in policing and traffic enforcement; and contributed to winning rent stabilization and stronger immigrant protections locally and statewide.
Description of Duties:
The Operations Manager will:
- Oversee and maintain financial systems (budget tracking, expense reconciliation, invoice processing, payroll coordination, and financial reporting support)
- Maintain HR and personnel systems, including onboarding and offboarding processes
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and filing requirements
- Support board logistics, including scheduling, document preparation, and record maintenance
- Manage organizational tools and platforms (e.g., CRM, file storage systems, accounting software, task management systems)
- Assist with grant reporting coordination and documentation tracking
- Maintain internal dashboards and operational tracking systems
- Develop and refine policies and operational workflows
- Support safety planning, data security, and organizational infrastructure improvements
- Coordinate with the Executive Director to ensure operational alignment with organizational strategy
- Must be willing to work occasional evenings or weekends for board meetings or major events.
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of experience in nonprofit operations, administration, finance, or organizational management
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Experience with budgeting, bookkeeping, or financial tracking
- Experience with HR processes and personnel systems
- Comfort working in a small, growing organization where flexibility is required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High level of discretion and professionalism with confidential information
- Strong commitment to racial, economic, and gender justice
- Ability to build and maintain systems that support grassroots organizing
Preferred but not required:
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks)
- Experience supporting a nonprofit board of directors
- Experience working with youth-led or grassroots organizations
Salary: Commensurate with experience. Benefits available and structured proportionally based on hours. YPP covers 100% of the health insurance premium for individual full-time employees.
