Young People for Progress (YPP) is hiring two paid Community College Organizing Fellows to build student organizing power this spring. If you care about social justice, student issues, and building real change on campus, this opportunity may be a strong fit.
Position Details
Hours: 8–10 hours per week
Duration: Late March / Early April – Mid May 2026 (about 7 weeks)
Pay: $18–$20 per hour
Location: Community college campuses in Montgomery County
Role & Responsibilities
Fellows will conduct outreach and organize students through:
- Class announcements
- Visits to student organizations
- Tabling on campus
- Engagement at campus events
- Follow-up conversations and recruitment
Fellows will organize around YPP’s campaign priorities, including ending the school-to-prison pipeline, advancing restorative justice and student wellbeing, reducing youth criminalization, and protecting immigrant communities. Training, political education, and weekly supervision will be provided.
Fellowship Outcomes
By the end of the semester, fellows will:
- Identify key issues affecting students on campus
- Develop a small list of students willing to host issue-focused meetings
- Recruit and begin convening a core organizing committee of approximately 5–10 students
- Support committee members in taking at least one concrete action (e.g., contacting an elected official, attending a hearing or rally, participating in outreach)
This fellowship is designed to lay the groundwork for future organizing campaigns.
Qualifications
- Current community college student in Montgomery County
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to initiate conversations and build relationships
- Reliable and able to manage time independently
- Interest in organizing, civic engagement, or social justice
- Commitment to racial, economic, and immigrant justice
- Prior organizing experience is welcome but not required.
About Young People for Progress
Young People for Progress (YPP) is a community organizing organization building political power among young adults and youth in Montgomery County. YPP campaigns focus on ending youth criminalization, advancing restorative justice in schools, and reducing racial disparities in policing and traffic enforcement. Since its founding, YPP has won the removal of School Resource Officers from MCPS; secured restorative justice coaches in all 211 schools and full-time social workers in high schools; advanced local policy reforms addressing racial disparities in policing and traffic enforcement; and contributed to winning rent stabilization and stronger immigrant protections locally and statewide.
